The Donald L. Duell Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 by David and Sharon Duell, son and daughter-in-law of Donald, in honor of Donald and for Sharon earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Indiana. Donald was born in Magadore, Ohio, on February 19, 1909. He and his wife, Anne, were married for 45 years.
Donald spent many years in the automotive field as a successful manager of dealerships in Northern Ohio. His life was work and family. He spent many years caring for Anne who battled serious illnesses.
David, Donald and Anne’s only son, followed his father in the automobile field after studying Business Management at The Ohio State University in Columbus. David worked for Chrysler Corporation from 1965 until 1980 when he and Sharon purchased Evansville Chrysler. The dealership dropped the Chrysler and acquired Kia, Mazda, Volvo franchises and eventually the Evansville Hyundai franchise. One of his favorite past times was drag racing.
David was a longtime president of the Santa Clothes Club, which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and gave clothing to thousands of Tri-State children every year. In 2004, David’s charitable work earned him the Boys and Girls Club’s highest honor. These and other civic involvements led him to join the Ivy Tech Foundation board and Junior Achievement.
This scholarship was created to help students pursue their interest in the automotive field. In addition to helping deserving students, the scholarship provides vitally needed, well-trained employees for our local automotive industry.
