The Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Chapter. The Vanderburgh Chapter was formed on November 18, 1896 in Evansville, Indiana. In 1997, the chapter’s name was changed to Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter.
Vanderburgh was born in Troy, New York, in 1760, and at 16, became a lieutenant in the New York Continental Troops, rising to captain by the time the war ended in 1783. He came to the Northwest Territory, which included Indiana, about 1788, and two years later had married Francoise Connoyer, daughter of a prominent Vincennes, Indiana, family. In 1791 he became a justice of the peace and judge of probate in Knox County. When the first legislature elected by the people of the Northwest Territory met in Cincinnati in 1799, Vanderburgh was one of the five members of the legislative council and was named the council’s president. When the Indiana Territory was established, he was named a territorial judge. In 1807 he was named a member of the first Vincennes University board of trustees. Vanderburgh County, Indiana was named in his honor.
Fundraising events allow the Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution to raise money to fund annual student scholarships.
This scholarship was created to help students with financial need who are enrolled in the Ivy Tech Environmental Design Program.
