The Jennings D. Carter and Josephine K. Carter, the Jennings D. Carter and Ann Y. Carter, and the Ann Y. and Jennings D. Carter Scholarships were established by Jennings D. “Nick” Carter after his passing in 2002.
Born in Kosciusko County, Indiana in 1908, Carter received his B.S. degree from Indiana University in 1931. He went on to take graduate courses at Indiana University and New York University. During his last two years of college he worked as a waiter and dishwasher. He worked as a clerk, teller, cashier, loan supervisor, land planner/analyst and estate loan manager before organizing the Carter Mortgage Corporation in 1946. He later sold the Corporation to Old National Bank in 1960. From that point on, Carter was quite successful in real estate and stock investing.
Carter was very active in numerous organizations including the Evansville Board of Realtors and the Society of Residential Appraisers; he held memberships in the Evansville Country Club, Kiwanis Club, the Elks and the United States Power Squadron. Fishing, boating, and golf were his favorite sports, but they were not his hobby, for travel held that spot.
Carter, along with his first wife, Josephine, and his second wife Ann, were huge supporters of higher education and interested in assisting students in need. Through their vision and generosity, thousands of Ivy Tech students will continue to learn and enhance their careers.
